Use these notes to prepare for the Practice Test. Focus on meanings and required actions.

Basic Road Rules

  • Keep left: Drive on the left side. Overtake only when safe and permitted by markings/signs.

  • Seatbelts: Driver and passengers must wear seatbelts where fitted.
  • Helmets: Motorcyclist and pillion passenger should wear helmets.
  • Mobile phones: Do not use a handheld phone while driving; use hands-free only where permitted.
  • License: Driving without a valid driving license is illegal.

Must-Know Regulatory Signs (You Must Obey)

  • STOP: Come to a complete stop. Move only when safe.
  • GIVE WAY (Yield): Slow down and give priority to traffic on the main road.
  • NO ENTRY: You must not enter from this direction.
  • NO PARKING: Parking is not allowed in the signed area.
  • NO U-TURN: U-turn is prohibited at this location.
  • SPEED LIMIT: Do not exceed the posted speed.
  • ONE WAY: Traffic flows in one direction only.

Tip: Regulatory signs indicate rules, restrictions, or mandatory actions.

Warning Signs (Hazards Ahead)

  • SCHOOL AHEAD: Reduce speed and watch for children.
  • SPEED BREAKER AHEAD: Slow down and cross carefully.
  • RAILWAY CROSSING AHEAD: Be prepared to stop. Look and listen for trains.
  • SLIPPERY ROAD: Reduce speed; avoid sudden braking/steering.

Road Markings

  • Solid center line on your side: Do not cross / do not overtake.
  • Broken (dashed) center line: You may overtake if the road ahead is clear and safe.
  • Double solid center line: Do not cross/overtake in either direction.
  • Zebra crossing: Give way to pedestrians on or entering the crossing.

Traffic Signals

  • Flashing amber/yellow: Proceed with caution and give way as necessary.

Roundabouts & Intersections

  • Roundabout rule: Give way to traffic already on the roundabout.
  • Decision making: Slow down early, check mirrors, signal, and choose the correct lane.

Safe Driving Habits

  • Before changing lanes: Check mirrors, signal, and check blind spot.
  • If you miss a turn/exit: Continue safely and take the next safe route (do not reverse).
  • Wet roads: Stopping distance increases; reduce speed and leave extra gap.
  • Fatigue: If sleepy, stop in a safe place and rest before continuing.
  • Breakdown on a busy road: Move to a safe place if possible; use hazard lights and warning triangle.

Emergency Vehicles

  • Siren + lights: Give way safely and allow the vehicle to pass.
  • Do not block, race, or follow closely behind emergency vehicles.

Weather & Night Driving

  • Fog: Use low beam headlights (and fog lights if fitted).
  • Oncoming traffic at night: Dip headlights to low beam.
  • Visibility: Slow down, increase following distance, and avoid harsh inputs (brake/steer).
