Use these notes to prepare for the Practice Test. Focus on meanings and required actions.
Basic Road Rules
- Keep left: Drive on the left side. Overtake only when safe and permitted by markings/signs.
- Lane discipline: Stay in your lane, avoid sudden lane changes, and keep a safe following distance.
- Seatbelts: Driver and passengers must wear seatbelts where fitted.
- Helmets: Motorcyclist and pillion passenger should wear helmets.
- Mobile phones: Do not use a handheld phone while driving; use hands-free only where permitted.
- License: Driving without a valid driving license is illegal.
Must-Know Regulatory Signs (You Must Obey)
- STOP: Come to a complete stop. Move only when safe.
- GIVE WAY (Yield): Slow down and give priority to traffic on the main road.
- NO ENTRY: You must not enter from this direction.
- NO PARKING: Parking is not allowed in the signed area.
- NO U-TURN: U-turn is prohibited at this location.
- SPEED LIMIT: Do not exceed the posted speed.
- ONE WAY: Traffic flows in one direction only.
Tip: Regulatory signs indicate rules, restrictions, or mandatory actions.
Warning Signs (Hazards Ahead)
- SCHOOL AHEAD: Reduce speed and watch for children.
- SPEED BREAKER AHEAD: Slow down and cross carefully.
- RAILWAY CROSSING AHEAD: Be prepared to stop. Look and listen for trains.
- SLIPPERY ROAD: Reduce speed; avoid sudden braking/steering.
Road Markings
- Solid center line on your side: Do not cross / do not overtake.
- Broken (dashed) center line: You may overtake if the road ahead is clear and safe.
- Double solid center line: Do not cross/overtake in either direction.
- Zebra crossing: Give way to pedestrians on or entering the crossing.
Traffic Signals
- Red: Stop and remain stopped until green.
- Flashing amber/yellow: Proceed with caution and give way as necessary.
Roundabouts & Intersections
- Roundabout rule: Give way to traffic already on the roundabout.
- Decision making: Slow down early, check mirrors, signal, and choose the correct lane.
Safe Driving Habits
- Before changing lanes: Check mirrors, signal, and check blind spot.
- If you miss a turn/exit: Continue safely and take the next safe route (do not reverse).
- Wet roads: Stopping distance increases; reduce speed and leave extra gap.
- Fatigue: If sleepy, stop in a safe place and rest before continuing.
- Breakdown on a busy road: Move to a safe place if possible; use hazard lights and warning triangle.
Emergency Vehicles
- Siren + lights: Give way safely and allow the vehicle to pass.
- Do not block, race, or follow closely behind emergency vehicles.
Weather & Night Driving
- Fog: Use low beam headlights (and fog lights if fitted).
- Oncoming traffic at night: Dip headlights to low beam.
- Visibility: Slow down, increase following distance, and avoid harsh inputs (brake/steer).
